Inverse Psoriasis Diet

Inverse psoriasis is an uncommon condition that looks similar to rashes or to the standard psoriasis. It does not appear on exposed areas but instead occurs in skin folds such as the armpit and groin. Although there are different medicines that can treat inverse psoriasis, a natural treatment for inverse psoriasis can be done – inverse psoriasis diet.

Theory Behind the Diet

What you eat, whether is an acid- or alkaline- forming food, is what determines the kinds of bacteria that stay in your gut. Eating acid-producing food has a tendency for a higher level of harmful bacteria to reside in your gut rather than the good types of bacteria.

There are also some types of food that are harder to digest. The stomach requires more work thus producing more acid, which in turn increases the number of harmful bacteria. Direct damage to the gut walls may even occur.

Another factor that causes secretion of more stomach acid is stress. This also creates additional damage.

Over time, the intestines become “leaky” due to the sustained damage. Because of this, toxins from the food we eat and other proteins are directly distributed into the body without being digested first. The immune system then increases the level of inflammation in response to these toxins. If this continues, the person involved might develop chronic illnesses such as asthma, arthritis, heart disease, or cancer.

People with psoriasis are most likely to have defective immune systems, and their diet might make the disorder worse. Natural treatment by changing to a proper diet will allow for the gut to heal reducing the level of inflammation.

The Diet

To prevent or treat inverse psoriasis naturally, you must eat a wide variety of whole grains, high fiber food, fresh vegetables and fruits. Intake on food with sugar and white flour must be drastically reduced. Animal foods such as meats, eggs, milk products, and shellfish must be taken at a little amount (except for freely-swimming fish). Fat consumption, especially saturated fats, must be reduced.

You must also determine the types of food that you are intolerant to or have an allergy of and stay away from them. For people with psoriasis, the common food that poses problems is wheat (due to the presence of gluten), nightshades, and citrus fruits.

In addition, chew your food properly as this keeps your stomach acid down. Avoid chlorinated water because chlorine kills some good gut microbes. Eat good food and try not to get yourself hungry.

Healthy Lifestyle

For people with inverse psoriasis, they must maintain this diet for about 6 months for substantial healing. The Inverse Psoriasis Diet is a healthy lifestyle that also helps strengthen the immune system and avoid “leaky” guts. You might even gain more than just being free of inverse psoriasis by having a healthy body.

Basic information on Inverse Psoriasis

Inverse psoriasis is a skin disease that is chronic and autoimmune which is caused by skin folds or flexion creases rubbing together. People that are overweight or have excess skin folds with highly sensitive skin can get psoriasis. This type of psoriasis usually occurs in the genital area between the thigh and groin, in the armpits, under an overweight stomach and under the breasts.

There are different types of psoriasis. The common type of psoriasis would be the plaque psoriasis where a person would develop scales on the skin because the skin would regenerate in days instead of weeks. The dead skin is not able to shed fast enough that it builds up producing thick scaly patches on the skin. Inverse psoriasis however does not build up scaly patches but it causes the skin to get red and swollen.

Facts about Psoriasis

If you recently discovered you have psoriasis or just know someone that has it, here are 8 facts that you might not know about psoriasis:

Psoriasis is not contagious. Unlike other diseases like Hepatitis or even the flu, psoriasis cannot be passed on from one person to another. It is not a communicable disease nor will you get psoriasis by just borrowing a friend’s comb or personal belongings.

One of the causes of psoriasis to flare up is stress. A patient with psoriasis would need to relax or stress reduction

Yeast overgrowth can also cause inverse psoriasis. This, combined with the skin’s high sensitivity to friction and sweating would cause skin lesions to form when skin folds rub together.

Psoriasis is caused by malfunctioning T lymphocyte or T cells. Instead of T cells travelling through the body to fight foreign substances, viruses or bacteria, it causes the T cells to attack the skin mistaking it for a foreign substance.

Psoriasis goes through a cycle that would flare up for a few days, weeks or months and then subsides for a period of time. Psoriasis might remiss for a period of time but will eventually return.

Certain medications like lithium which is prescribed for patients with bipolar disorder, inderal which are high blood pressure medications like beta blockers, antimalarial drugs, quindine which are heart medications known to worsen some cases of psoriasis and Indomethacin which are anti-flammatory drugs that are used to treat arthritis.

Because the skin is very sensitive in inverse psoriasis, this makes it harder to treat.

Research finds that there is an increase risk of certain types of skin cancer for psoriatic patients. Certain types of skin cancer are the squamous cell carcinoma and lymphoma. Some patients develop this through some sort of psoriasis treatment which suppresses the immune system. Always have regular screenings for cancer to avoid this.

A Challenge

Inverse psoriasis appears like a tender red rash that can be found in the groin, armpits, under the breasts, under the genitals, and under the buttocks. Treatment of inverse psoriasis can be a challenge because most of the cases occur in the most sensitive areas of the body.

Treatment

For treatment of inverse psoriasis, medications may range from over-the-counter hydrocortisone to prescription-strength medications such as Elidel (pimecrolimus) and Protopic (tacrolimus). Because of skin sensitivity in flexure areas, Protopic and Elidel are medications usually preferred over cortisone-type treatments. Use of steroidal treatments such as hydrocortisone may cause skin thinning and other side effects.

Protopic and Elidel medications are given the strongest warning by the FDA by including black-box warnings for these treatments. Using the medication increases the risk of viral infections and a possibility, although rare, of developing lymphoma and skin cancer. Even if these medications are the preferred types, FDA recommends both medications to only be used as last resorts over a short period of time only.

The American Academy of Dermatology’s considers the appropriate use of these medications under the supervision of a dermatologist, despite the black-box warnings, to be safe and effective. Many dermatologists treat inverse psoriasis using these medicines first as they do not involve the risk of skin thinning.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) light is believed to slow the growth of psoriasis cells and its use as treatment for inverse psoriosis is helpful. For treatment to be received, the patient must undress and stand in a light box, usually at the doctor’s office.

A case study in 2002 reported that after 3 weeks of UVB light treatment, one patient received “complete clearance” from inverse psoriasis lesions. A larger study using UVB light among people with standard psoriasis says that about 66% were “90% clear after a maximum of 10 treatments.”

A product called Castellani’s Paint of Castederm is used by patients whose inverse psoriasis is usually worsened by moisture. It is a liquid medication that comes in both prescription and nonprescription strength and contains the active ingredient phenol. Available over the counter are Domeboro astringent soaks and this can also be helpful.

In cases were inverse psoriasis is particularly stubborn, treatment using biologics such as Enbrel (etanercept) and Remicade (infliximab) may be recommended by a doctor. These types of medications are injected.

A change in diet might also be a good treatment for inverse psoriasis. Eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and avoid some types of animal food such as meats, eggs, and shellfish.

Coping

A patient must follow their doctor’s recommendations by being active in their health care and track the triggers that cause flare-ups. Connecting with other patients in the same situation can provide emotional support as well as offer valuable information on how to cope up with inverse psoriosis.

Patients should be active participants in their health care, which means following doctors’ recommendations and tracking triggers that cause flare-ups. Ask about the latest treatments. And, as with any chronic condition, connecting with other patients can reap valuable information as well as emotional support.

What is Inverse Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a disease that appears on the skin which is chronic and autoimmune. Inverse Psoriasis also known as flexural psoriasis occurs in skin folds like the genitals where it occurs between the thigh and groin, the armpits, under the stomach or pannus, under the breasts which is called an inframamamary fold. Since this type of psoriasis affects the skin folds or flexion creases, it occurs more to individuals who are overweight.

Some facts about psoriasis would be that psoriasis is not contagious so you will not get it from another person. Treatment of psoriasis could be difficult because the areas that are affected by inverse psoriasis are highly sensitive. Psoriasis goes through a cycle where it would flare for a few weeks or even months, and then, subsides for a period of time or even remiss. After remission, given some period of time, psoriasis returns.

Symptoms

In comparison to other common types of psoriasis like plaque psoriasis, inverse psoriasis does not scale. Inverse psoriasis causes the skin to inflame to bright red smooth patches of skin that can be painful and itchy.

Causes

The cause of psoriasis is when the immune system would send out faulty signals to the body that would speed up cell growth. The main cause of an inverse psoriasis is that the skin is being aggravated by the friction and the sweat. This type of psoriasis is vulnerable to fungal infections. Another cause of inverse psoriasis may be because of yeast overgrowth including the high sensitivity of the skin to both friction and sweating. Research also shows that the cause of inverse psoriasis might have a genetic component to it. Meaning, it might be passed on through the genes. Another possible cause would be from stress. The stress causes the skin to flare more which could only be avoided with relaxation and stress reduction.

Research also shows that cause of inverse psoriasis might be related with the immune system mainly the white blood cell called T cell or T lymphocyte. T cells travel through the body to detect and fight viruses or bacteria. With psoriasis, the T cells attack the skin cell mistaking it for a foreign body. The cause of the malfunctioning of the T cells is still under research but there are theories that it might be genetic or caused by environmental factors.

Some other possible triggers that cause inverse psoriasis that are still not scientifically proven would be allergies, diet and weather.

Some factors that would trigger psoriasis would be:

Infections, such as strep throat or thrush

Injury to the skin, such as a cut or scrape, bug bite, or a severe sunburn

Stress

Cold weather

Smoking

Heavy alcohol consumption

Certain medications — including lithium, which is prescribed for bipolar disorder; high blood pressure medications such as beta blockers; antimalarial drugs; and iodides

Inverse psoriasis is treated very cautiously as skin patches are very sensitive and may cause extra irritation, especially in case of patience who is suffering from inverse psoriasis in genital area. Treating inverse psoriasis is very difficult.

Generally steroid ointments are applied on patches as they are more effective, but should be applied carefully. The ointments and creams used are found to be reliable, because of the side effects the treatment given must be in minimum. The thinning of skin can be caused by these steroidal ointments like hydrocortisone, one of the side effects of this ointment.

Even more difficulties arise by treating inverse psoriasis because of the locations of the lesions being having the tendency to yeast and fungal infections. Because of this problem, doctors may dilute the treatments by including antifungal or anti yeast agents. Friction and perspiration, it is difficult to avoid in the flexure areas, this makes the condition worse. The usage of ultraviolet treatment is more helpful. UVB light helps to hinder the multiplication of psoriasis cells.

In few patients, in who the inverse psoriasis condition is worst because of moisture got to be relieved with Castederm or Castellani’s paint. This is one type of medication which is in liquid form which contains active ingredient phenol, comes in both prescription and nonprescription strength. The soaks of Domeboro astringent, which are also available, are also found to be helpful.

Inverse psoriasis also called Flexural Psoriasis is not very common type of psoriasis. Inverse psoriasis is a rare form of psoriasis and affects between 2-6% of those who are suffering from psoriasis.

Inverse psoriasis does not usually occur on exposed skin areas. It generally occurs in armpits, groin, under the breasts and in other flexion areas like skin folds. In some cases it also occurs in the areas around genitals and buttocks and for this reason it is some times also known as skin fold psoriasis or genital psoriasis.

Inverse psoriasis is easily recognized by inflamed, bright red yet soft patches of skin that may be very painful and itchy, feel like relief when scratched but it become painful later. In case of inverse psoriasis scales usually does not form like in plaque psoriasis. The lesions are gleaming, soft and smooth. The affected areas are sensitive and can be easily irritated through adjoining skin friction to the patches or due to sweating in these areas.

The easy way to recognize inverse psoriasis is the color of the patches, which are white, and it become soft when soaked in water, and resembles exactly like a fungal infection.

One cause of inverse psoriasis may be overgrowth of yeast. It has high sensitivity to friction and/or sweating. In inverse psoriasis the skin lesions are further intensified by the sweat and skin rubbing together in folding of the skin. Inverse psoriasis is more frequent and common in people who are flabby and those with profound skin folds. Inverse psoriasis occurs in some of the most sensitive areas of the body where treatment can be a challenge.

Inverse Psoriasis is categorized as a non infectious, auto immune disease that generally affects the skin folds all over the body such as armpit, skin under the breasts, groins, buttocks and skin folds under the genitals.

Skin diseases are often generalized as contagious and viewed as a source of infection. However, Psoriasis, which is one of the skin conditions known worldwide, is not under this category.

A type of Psoriasis
Generally, there are various types of Psoriasis. One type of this disease is Inverse Psoriasis, which is categorized as a non infectious, auto immune disease that generally affects the skin folds all over the body such as armpit, skin under the breasts, groins, buttocks and skin folds under the genitals. These are the parts that are always subjected to irritation due to frequent rubbing and excessive sweating. The cause of Inverse Psoriasis is believed to be genetic and is also assumed to be a stress related condition. The immune system if triggered speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells therefore causing Inverse Psoriasis.

Causes, Symptoms, Treatment
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and sudden withdrawal of corticosteroids are triggering factors that cause Inverse Psoriasis. Some medications are also believed to trigger Inverse Psoriasis. Among these drugs is Lithium which is used to treat manic depression and Anti malarial which is used to prevent and treat malaria. However, people who are remarkably overweight and who has deep skin folds have a great possibility of acquiring Inverse Psoriasis.

Inverse Psoriasis appears in skin folds of the body. Unlike the other types of Psoriasis, which appears to be a red scaly patches occurring in the joints, elbows and knees, Inverse Psoriasis is characterized by smooth, deep red and glistening patches but with the absence of scale. The patch is considered to be tender, has creased in the center of the fold that may be cracked open. Because it is usually in the unexposed areas of the body, Inverse Psoriasis produces debilitating pain and itching.
There are various treatment involved in Inverse Psoriasis. These include topical treatment from over the counter medications such as hydrocortisone. However, these are not preferred as to its lack of sensitivity.

Another is water therapy which is the combination of sea salts and water. This cleans pores and detoxifies the body. Another important factor that is helpful in treating Inverse Psoriasis is the mental wellbeing of the patient. This must be considered, as it can lead to depression due to the manifestation of the psoriasis lesions, the onset of limited mobility, and disfigurement. The resulting lack of self esteem has a powerfully negative effect on overall mental health.
Inverse Psoriasis should not be associated as contagious as people with this kind of condition should be understood and be taken care of by society. They shouldn’t be isolated and discriminated. Treatment is possible and further researches are currently being done; maybe not to eliminate the condition but to lessen the number of people suffering from this condition.

Plaque psoriasis is one of the most common types of psoriasis, amounting to 80% of all skin disorder cases. People who are suffering from this condition develop inflamed and red skin lesions that are usually covered in scaly and silvery skin. It can develop in different parts of the body but in general, it occurs on the elbows, the knees, scalp and lower back. It is considered as an immune system disorder, which can be hereditary.

Psoriasis has different types – nail psoriasis, plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, scalp psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and erythrodermic psoriasis. Signs and symptoms of psoriasis vary from one person to another and may include the following:

The red patches on the skin are usually inflamed with silvery scales, which can be painful and itchy. There are cases wherein the red patches bleed and crack. The condition can also affect toenails and fingernails. Nail discoloration and pitting can also occur that can cause complete nail damage. Scalp psoriasis is red and itchy with silvery scales. You may notice flakes in your shoulders and hair after scratching the scalp. People who are less than thirty years old are usually prone to having guttate psoriasis. Common signs of this condition are small water sores on arms, scalp, legs and trunks. Inverse psoriasis usually affects the skin in the groin, armpits, around the genitals and under the breasts. Individuals who are overweight have higher risk of having inverse psoriasis that can be aggravated by sweating and friction.

Psoriasis can be distressing because it is not only painful and itchy but can also lessen one’s self-confidence. Some people who have this condition are depressed and find it difficult in coping with their situation.

There are different treatments for plaque psoriasis and it is important to determine the severity of psoriasis you have in order to treat the condition effectively. The most common treatment are topical ointments and creams that include calcineurin inhibitors, corticosteroids, vitamin D and topical retinoids. Most people use moisturizing products that can be purchased over the counter. Though these creams and lotions cannot get rid of the condition completely, they can help lessen the dryness and itching.

Oral medications are also recommended that should be combined with the use of ointments and creams. However, take note of the fact that some oral medications can cause serious side effects so they must be taken for a short period of time.

Another effective treatment option for plaque psoriasis is the use of ultraviolet light. You can easily treat your condition by exposing the affected area to sunlight regularly for short periods of time. Due to the harmful effects of overexposure to the sun, it is recommended to consult your doctor and ask about other ways to use sunlight therapy safely. There are other kinds of light therapy including photochemotherapy, UVB phototherapy and narrow-band UVB therapy.

Remember that there is no perfect cure for plaque psoriasis that can prevent it from recurring. Therefore, it is important to know the different precautions in order to lessen the severity of your condition and ease the irritation, pain and inflammation. There are different factors that cause the condition such as stress, smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol. To be informed about various ways to treat psoriasis, it is best to do some research and visit www.preventpsoriasis.com to help you find the right solution.

PSORIASIS is a chronic, non-contagious disorder which affects the skin and joints, characterized by flaking, redness and inflammation of the skin. Once thought to be a skin disorder, psoriasis is now understood to be a condition originating in the immune system.

The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes on a silvery-white appearance. Plaques frequently occur on the skin of the elbows and knees, but can affect any area including the scalp and genitals. In contrast to eczema, psoriasis is more likely to be found on the extensor aspect of the joint.

The disorder is a chronic recurring condition which varies in severity from minor localized patches to complete body coverage. Fingernails and toenails are frequently affected (psoriatic nail dystrophy) – and can be seen as an isolated finding. Psoriasis can also cause inflammation of the joints, which is known as psoriatic arthritis. Ten to fifteen percent of people with psoriasis have psoriatic arthritis.

The cause of psoriasis starts with the immune system. T cells, a type of white blood cell, usually protect the body against infection and disease by attacking bacteria and viruses. However, when you have psoriasis, your T cells mistakenly attack your skin cells instead. Your body then produces other immune system responses, leading to swelling and rapid production of skin cells. Psoriasis tends to run in families and it usually appears between the ages of 10 and 45.

Psoriasis is an inherited disease. However there are certain triggering factors such as injury to the skin, vaccinations and certain medications that have been responsible for the development of this condition. It usually takes about a month for new cells to move from the lower layers of the skin to the surface. In psoriasis, this process takes only a few days, resulting in a build up of dead skin cells and formation of thick scales.

Psoriasis occurs more likely in dry skin than oily or well-moisturized skin. Excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of or overexposure to sunlight, stress, cold climate, physical illness, streptococcal or HIV infection, superficial wounds, or taking certain drugs such as lithium, beta-blockers such as propranolol, anti-malarial medications and in general poor health results in flaring up of psoriasis.

The symptoms of psoriasis can manifest in a variety of forms. Different types of psoriasis exhibit different characteristics that may change over time. One form may change to another, or several forms may exist at the same time.

Plaque psoriasis: This is the most common type of psoriasis. It is characterized by raised, red lesions covered with silvery white scales. The scales are caused by a building up of dead skin cells. It may appear on the knees, elbows, scalp, trunk or any other skin surface. Guttate psoriasis: It is characterised by numerous small red dots of psoriasis. The lesions may have some scaling. These numerous spots of psoriasis appear over large areas of the body, such as the trunk, limbs, and scalp. It may appear suddenly following a bacterial or viral infection or the administration of drugs like ketoconazole and salicylic acid. Inverse psoriasis: This is usually found in the folds of the skin in the armpits, groin, under an overweight stomach or under the breasts. It appears as smooth, red lesions without scaling and may cause irritation due to rubbing and sweating. Pustular psoriasis: It is characterized by blisters filled with pus on the skin. The blisters are not infectious. It may be found on the hands and feet or may be spread all over. The skin under and surrounding pustules is red and tender. Psoriatic arthritis: About 10% of the patients with psoriasis may develop a form of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis. This may cause redness and swelling, primarily on the hands, feet, knees, hips, elbows and spine. It may cause stiffness, pain and joint damage. Nail psoriasis: produces a variety of changes in the appearance of finger and toe nails. These changes include discolouring under the nail plate, pitting of the nails, lines going across the nails, thickening of the skin under the nail, and the loosening and crumbling of the nail. Erythrodermic psoriasis: involves the widespread inflammation and exfoliation of the skin over most of the body surface. It may be accompanied by severe itching, swelling and pain. It is often the result of an exacerbation of unstable plaque psoriasis, particularly following the abrupt withdrawal of systemic treatment. This form of psoriasis can be fatal, as the extreme inflammation and exfoliation disrupt the body’s ability to regulate temperature and for the skin to perform barrier functions.

Diagnosis of psoriasis is usually based on the appearance of the skin. There are no special blood tests or diagnostic procedures for psoriasis. Sometimes a skin biopsy, or scraping, may be needed to rule out other disorders and to confirm the diagnosis.

As per Ayurveda, Psoriasis is caused by vitiation of vata and kapha dosha. The vitiated doshas affect the skin and blood tissues. They also influence water element of the affected region on skin. Thus the skin which is influenced by affected doshas becomes discolored (white or copper colored), scaly and thin.

CHARAKA offers a very effective treatment methodology based on the classical texts of Ayurveda. The treatment comprises of Detoxification through Panchakarma therapies, administration of internal medication and external applications, which not only helps in curing Psoriasis but also in preventing relapse.

for more infomation log on to http://www.charaka.org

or mail to info@charaka.org

By: dr m chandrashekhar
About the Author:

Psoriasis is a long lasting, chronic skin ailment characterized by inflammation and scaling of outer layer of skin. The symptoms of psoriasis are chronic skin rash condition with a red or silver color and the skin has blisters.

The symptoms of having the disease are recurring attacks of skin rashes, small red patches that expands and becomes scaly, red plaques and silvery scales etc.

When psoriasis occurs, patches on the skin thicken, reddens, and become covered with silvery scales referred to as plaques. These patches are itchy or have a burning sensation with crack in the skin at the joints.

Psoriasis occurs in a wide variety of areas in the body including the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, face, palms, fingernails, and soles of the feet, toenails and even on the soft tissues inside the mouth. Psoriasis often leads to psoriatic arthritis.

Researchers have commented that, psoriasis is a disorder of the immune system. In psoriasis the abnormal immune system leads to the over-production of T-cells; a type of white blood cell that protects against infections; that in turn triggers the excessive skin cell production and inflammation.

There are certain conditions that flare up the problem of psoriasis, like infections, stress, change of climate and excessive dry skin. There are certain medications that worsen the problem of psoriasis such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and medicines for treating high blood pressure or depression.

Psoriasis may also be hereditary. Genetic connections with a psoriasis patient may also trigger the diseases.

Diagnosis of psoriasis requires a through examination and required diagnosis. There are various types of psoriasis. The most common type is the plaque psoriasis or psoriasis vulgaris as known scientifically.

In this type of psoriasis, the lesions have a reddened base covered by silvery base. Guttate psoriasis are caused by viral respiratory infections or streptococcal infections. In this type, drop like lesions occur on the limbs, and scalp. The non-infectious pus characterizes pustular psoriasis. Sunlight allergies, medications, infections, perspirations, emotional stress, chemicals and even pregnancy cause it.

Large, dry, smooth red plaques occurring in the folds of the skin near the genitals, in the armpits and under the breast, characterizes inverse psoriasis. It is related to over-sensitivity to sweating and friction. Reddening and scaling of the skin, accompanied by itching sensation and pain in the area happens in the case of erythrodermic psoriasis.

The disease, psoriasis requires a systematic treatment according to the severity of the problem and responsiveness to certain medication. The effectiveness of the treatments varies from one individual to another.

The type of treatment suitable for a particular patient depends on the location of the lesion, their size, amount of skin affected, response to the undergoing treatment and most importantly the perceptions of the patient and preferences about the treatment undergoing. The treatment is according to the specific forms of disorder.

There are mainly three types of treatment provided to the patients affected by psoriasis. In the topical treatment, the patient is suggested loads of fresh air and sunlight, steroid ointments, and medicines prepared from coal tar or anthralin and vitamin D3.

Other topical solutions include, bath solutions and moisturizers. Phototherapy and systematic treatment for severe cases are other forms of psoriasis treatment.

By: Louise Forrest
About the Author:
